here is a fish fact: the betta fish is a kind of labyrinth fish from the suborder anabantoidei. what makes them special is the fact that all fish of this order possess a specialized organ called the labyrinth that allows them to utilize oxygen directly from the air as well as the dissolved oxygen in the water that they take in from their gills. this organ is present in all fish of the anabantoidei suborder, however they initially only breath with their gills as the labyrinth only develops as they grow older
